I am part of a lovely group of ladies on a BabyCenter Community group and one idea was to do a post about job sharing. I must admit I don’t have any direct experience with job sharing, but I have two close co-workers that job shared. Typically a full-time position is split into 2 part-time positions that often overlap. In this instance, my coworkers covered the same hospital unit 5 days a week and an additional unit 1 day a week. For example, one worked MWTh and the other worked MThF. On Monday they covered different units, on the other days they cross-covered the same unit. They also worked one weekend a month without comp days to equal 0.7 FTE (70% of fulltime).
If you have the opportunity to job share, I think it is an excellent opportunity. First, you need to decide how to split the position. Will you each cover the same area on different days or overlap any days of the week? Will you switch days if you need time off? If one person changes jobs, is there a difficulty in covering the position? What happens on days you overlap? Is one person the lead person?
Second, I think communication is the key. It is essential in sharing the position. You need to have a way to communicate on days your colleague is not there. You need to decide how to handle disagreement in the position. You also need to decide on how to handle feedback…what works, what isn’t working.
Do you have any experience job sharing? What kind of jobs are set up for job sharing?
