One of the things that tears up new moms the most is missing those first steps….rolling over…first words. The worst is hearing stories of caregivers go on and on about how your child has done X for days and days! Grrrrr!! It starts to make you question if your baby will even know mommy. Seriously. I had those thoughts.
First, babies will ALWAYS know mommy. ALWAYS. Second, sometimes it’s nice for baby to want someone else. Knowing that my kids loved our nanny actually warmed my heart as well. There were a few days where they actually preferred her, and I just had to laugh! Third, milestone do NOT happen until mommy sees them happy. This is of utmost important if you have another caregiver. It does not matter if grandma, or sister-in-law, or daycare, or nanny, or daddy is watching baby. It does not happen :)))
For the record, both of my children rolled over for the first time when I was home…and out of the room. My husband and my dad saw it before I did. Still, it happened for me the first time I saw it for the first time!!
Don’t beat yourself up over the milestones. It is hardest with the first. With my second, I was good if I added them to my google calendar. Still no scrapbook. Milestones are big. Milestones are HUGE. The best part….you’ll see them again. Even if you stayed at home, you may not be the “first” one to see everything, and that’s actually ok. I can’t count the number of times my husband or I bragged about seeing something the first time only to find out the other parent had already seen it several times. Make it your first!
