Lent is the period of time observed on the Christian liturgical from Ash Wednesday to Holy Thursday (right before Good Friday). It is a reminder of the 40 days Jesus spent in the wildnerness, being tempted.
Lent has become a very special time of year for me. It wasn’t until the past couple of years that I really took the significance of it seriously. It seems to have become more popular recently, and the line at Starbucks gets shorter. Sweet tea is given up commonly where we live! While that is well and good, I have really felt called to go deeper.
Lent should be a time of prayer and preparation. Reflection, self-examination, repentance, spiritual discipline. Sure, skipping sweets or splurging on coffee stings a little but I’ve felt like it misses the significance of all that Lent could be.
I realize this is a bit of an unusual post and I realize that Lent has already started. It hit me how important it was for me as a mother, especially as a working mother, to reflect during this time. One of the things I gave up was listening to the radio in my car to/from work. I have a good 30 minutes each way…my me time…my time so not think about anything while I decompress and listen to the coffee house channel I realized how abbreviated my devotions had become so this has been a perfect way for me to make the most of my time. While it may not sound like much, it has been such a blessing. My kids have also had the best week in over a month behavior-wise. I will definitely continue to keep my radio off at times even after Lent. How could I not take up the time to pray over my family, my husband, my children, myself…30 free minutes.
Even if you do not observe Lent, I would really encourage you to consider using your time to and/or from work to pray over your family. Maybe one day a week, or for one week at a time. I know another dear person in my life that made the same “Lenten vow” this year, and I can’t help but feel that God had a hand in that “coincidence.” Even if you have a 5 minute drive, I am fully confident that God will reward that time!
