Proverbs 31 has been picked apart top to bottom and every sideways twist possible. Working moms find solace that the virtuous woman had some sort of “work,” “job,” “career,” “income.” Stay at home mom supporters insist that the virtuous woman was a work at home mom with a small side business. I was actually shocked at some of the interpretations I came across when researching it. Shocked.
It is so easy to tear apart Scripture and use it to serve our purposes or pull out a specific verse to apply to what we want. Guess what the entire Proverbs 31 passage is about? Not working. Not staying at home. Not even about being a mother or wife.
The woman to be admired and praised is the woman who lives in the Fear-of-God. Give her everything she deserves! Proverbs 31:30-31 (Message)
Whatever you do at work today, whatever you do at home this weekend, know that you are ordained by God. As long as you fear the Lord, you are doing what you are called to do…and to be.
