Welcome to the quarterly Babwise-Friendly Blog Network Week! The schedule for this week is as follows:
Today Valerie’s blog is about teaching Life Skills to our children. Life skills are those things around the house that help it to run smoothly and skills that they need to have in order to help things get done at home. Most of these skills have to be modeled and taught and practiced…which takes time and supervision in the beginning. As Valerie explains, it is much easier to put off teaching of those skills and do it ourselves in half the time. She gives great reasons why we shouldn’t put off teaching and involving our children in these tasks and gives some really good examples of what her children are doing at their current ages.
Over time our children can become a huge help at home but more importantly they are learning responsibility and a skill set that will prime them for life. I love the list she gives with ideas on how to get started teaching life skills. My favorite is #8. Allow Mistakes.
Allow for these mistakes–let your child’s best effort be enough.
It is very easy for me to rush in and want to demonstrate again how to do it, but see #7 (Allow Practice!). One of the best parts of her post is the list of resources and other posts she has on how to implement many of these life skills. Check out the full post today at The Babywise Mom!
