When my son was about three weeks old I had a friend recommend reading Babywise. I loved the entire book and started putting the method into practice right away. With one exception: the pacifier.
If possible, I recommend never introducing the pacifier at all. However, if you already have and it has become a sleep prop for you…then just do your best. By limiting it to the crib only and only going into our son’s room to put it back in his mouth I think we still allowed him to be a great sleeper. He may not have ever slept as solid as our daughter does but he still benefitted from the Babywise scheduling and lifestyle! He is about to turn four in a couple of weeks and still sleeps almost 12 hours at night and takes a 3 hour nap each day
